The Just Transitions in Motion project was created with the purpose of translating just transition into real-world practices, voices, and experiences. Throughout 2025, the initiative brought together more than 200 actors – including governments, negotiators, the private sector, unions, youth, traditional communities, and academia – in four participatory workshops held in Panama, Germany, Ethiopia, and Brazil. These listening and co-creation processes allowed for the identification of challenges and pathways to just transitions, connecting the technical dimension of negotiations to the lived reality of those who feel the effects of climate change most acutely. By fostering international collaboration, sharing knowledge, and promoting recommended and scalable practices, the project strengthens the link between global and local climate action, encouraging a transition to low-carbon and climate-resilient economies that is inclusive and equitable.
The Compass for Just Transitions is the analytical work resulting from consultations, academic evidence, and practical experiences, and aims to guide governments, international institutions, negotiators, and experts in translating high-level commitments into equitable and actionable strategies. While many frameworks and tools exist, this initiative stands out for focusing on co-created knowledge derived directly from stakeholder engagement, rather than a predefined research agenda. The Compass identifies common principles and key barriers, and proposes how to advance implementation, clarifying important conceptual and policy issues that arose in the negotiations. It explores what “Just Transition” means in practice, the barriers that prevent its realization, and opportunities for global cooperation to address structural inequalities, ensuring fair, inclusive, and sustainable decarbonization processes.

Just Transitions in Motion
This project promotes just transitions by bringing together different stakeholders in dialogues that go beyond formal climate negotiations, building bridges to make the decarbonization process as equitable as possible. With the support of the COP30 Presidency and the German government, it fosters global collaboration to co-create a Compass for Just Transitions—a guide that connects global debates with local strategies and guides implementation measures with a focus on justice.
