Working Paper Strengthening International Climate Governance: Lessons from other regimes

How can climate commitments be translated into effective implementation?

What role do rules, accountability mechanisms, and financing play in this process? How can better coordination among existing instruments contribute to this goal?

International climate governance has advanced significantly since the adoption of the Paris Agreement. Yet it continues to face challenges ranging from the implementation of countries’ commitments to the predictability of climate finance, as well as accountability, institutional coordination, participation, and equity.

Against this backdrop, LACLIMA launches the Working Paper “Strengthening International Climate Governance: Obstacles, Opportunities, and Lessons from Other International Regimes”, which examines the main institutional barriers to implementing climate commitments and identifies six priorities for making international climate governance more effective, predictable, and coordinated.

The publication also draws lessons from other international regimes and proposes ways to strengthen existing mechanisms under the Paris Agreement, with a focus on implementation, transparency, finance, participation, and cooperation.
