On June 15th, LACLIMA participated in the roundtable "Global Ethical Stocktake Roundtable: Ethics and Implementation under the UNFCCC," held during SB 64 in Bonn, Germany. Promoted by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), the event brought together government officials, international organizations, experts, and representatives of civil society to discuss how to strengthen the implementation of climate commitments from an ethical perspective.

At the event, LACLIMA presented the study "Paths and Recommendations for a Global Ethical Balance." The work mapped the different negotiation paths of the UNFCCC, classifying them according to their potential for incorporating ethics into the international climate regime. The objective is to transform the lessons learned into concrete proposals for formal negotiation spaces, ensuring that the ethical dimension is considered in a structuring way in the implementation of the Paris Agreement.

What is the Global Ethical Balance Sheet (GEB)?

The BEG is an international initiative that promotes dialogue on the ethical aspects of climate change. Last year, regional meetings on different continents discussed how values such as justice, equity, responsibility, and human dignity can guide global climate action.

Based on these dialogues, synthesis reports were prepared with recommendations for integrating ethics into the processes of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement. The premise is that the climate crisis is not merely a technical or economic challenge, but a profoundly human one, and therefore ethics must be an intrinsic part of the international response to the climate emergency.

The roundtable discussion in Bonn represented another step in this process, presenting preliminary results of the study and promoting dialogue about the next steps.
