On June 17th, LACLIMA participated in the side event “From Dependence on Fossil Fuels to a Just Transition: Recovery, Equity and Peace” , held during the Bonn Climate Conference in Germany.

The event was organized by LACLIMA in partnership with Amnesty International Brazil, Conectas Human Rights, the Institute for Socioeconomic Studies (INESC), and Themis, bringing together experts, representatives of civil society, and international organizations to discuss pathways to a just energy transition based on human rights.

Representing LACLIMA, executive director Caroline Rocha presented the Just Transition Compass (insert link) , an analytical guide developed by the organization based on consultations with experts, academic evidence, and practical experiences. The publication aims to support governments, international institutions, climate negotiators, and other decision-makers in transforming political commitments into concrete, equitable, and implementable strategies.

Moderated by Carolina Alves (INESC) and Caroline Rocha (LACLIMA), the debate addressed the impacts of fossil fuel dependence on communities and territories, focusing on topics such as racial equity, territorial rights, climate finance, and social participation in transition processes.

The panel included Ana Paula de Souza (OHCHR/ACNUDH), Jurema Werneck (Special Envoy of the Presidency of COP 30 and Amnesty International Brazil), Ann Harrison (Amnesty International), Elisa Morgera (UN Special Rapporteur on Climate Change and Human Rights), Letícia Ramos (Criola), Deniz Gümüşel (climate activist in Turkey), and Thales Machado (Conectas Human Rights).

The discussion reinforced the need for the transition to low-carbon economies to be conducted in an inclusive manner, guaranteeing the protection of human rights, social justice, and the effective participation of the populations most impacted by climate change and the transformation of energy systems.
