The Just Transitions in Motion project presents practical solutions to make Just Transitions a reality for communities in the region. It is supported by the COP 30 Presidency and the International Climate Initiative (IKI), on behalf of the German Federal Foreign Office (FFO) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWE).

Through a series of inclusive events, a space for dialogue will be created outside of formal negotiations—bringing together different actors to foster international collaboration, share knowledge, and promote best and scalable practices for Just Transitions.

These high-level consultations, expert dialogues, and interactions will enable stakeholders to develop a common understanding of how multilateral climate action can support the implementation of Just Transitions. The dialogues will also explore how these transitions can enable a shift within the UNFCCC framework, moving from negotiation to action.

These inclusive, co-creation-centered meetings will enable participants to help shape a comprehensive Just Transition Taxonomy—a framework that helps translate JT principles into concrete actions. The resulting analytical work will reshape COP 30 discussions, replacing theoretical debates with concrete, justice-driven implementation strategies.

COP 30 arrives at a decisive moment for global climate efforts, amidst a backdrop of increasingly severe climate change impacts and a complex geopolitical landscape. The conference represents an opportunity to reinforce the commitments made in the Paris Agreement, serving as a test of the strength of multilateral cooperation. Success will depend on delivering credible and ambitious results that advance social justice, inclusion, and equity.

Although climate action is underway worldwide, it remains insufficient in pace and scale. One of the main objectives of COP 30 will be to highlight viable solutions and drive the implementation of projects aligned with scientific guidance and the Global Stocktake. Ensuring that the results of the negotiations translate into concrete actions will be essential to achieving significant progress. COP 30 also offers the opportunity to deepen the integration of social and economic dimensions into climate strategies, strengthening the Just Transition Work Programme (JTWP) under the UNFCCC.

This approach ensures that the transition to low-carbon, climate-resilient economies is inclusive and equitable. A robust Just Transition Action Agenda will be crucial to driving implementation and generating real impact around the world.

Project objectives

Enable the implementation of Just Transitions through multilateral action: use the events and taxonomy to broaden alignment on Just Transitions, enabling international actors to overcome divisions and develop clear pathways for international cooperation in implementing Just Transitions.

Provide a space for multi-stakeholder alliances that support action on Just Transitions: promote meetings that bring together governments, the private sector, grassroots movements, and academia to co-create best practices and develop shared responsibility for Just Transitions.

Guide Just Transition strategies at multiple levels through practical frameworks: Use rigorous research and stakeholder engagement to inform a Just Transition Taxonomy adaptable to different regions. This framework will support the integration and implementation of Just Transition policies at the international, national, and local levels, as well as within specific sectors.
